Zara Muse British , b. 1970
Dignity is a large-format female portrait in profile, acrylic on dibond (an aluminium composite panel), 108 x 108 cm including frame. Three colours carry the entire painting: the red of a headwrap, the deep browns and plums of the skin, and a saturated yellow ground laid in broad, distinct slabs that give the background its own solidity and weight. It is the most pared-back composition in Muse's recent work, and the most commanding.
The figure's chin is lifted, the neck long, the posture entirely unperformed. Muse models the face in close-toned planes of aubergine, mahogany and mauve, each placed with the knife and left. There is no blending, no softening. The restraint is structural: a painting that achieves its force through what it declines to do. The title does not describe the figure so much as confirm what is already there.
