Victoria Horkan
The Light, The Sounds, The Shimmer is an oil on canvas measuring 100 × 100 cm by Victoria Horkan. Across the square surface, dense blossom like clusters of colour gather along the upper edge and again in the foreground, in saturated reds, pinks, oranges, blues and golds, while the centre opens into a softer field of pale gold and grey green light that hovers over water. Strokes of turquoise and blue slip and drag through this middle ground so that reflections seem to flicker across the surface and there is no single point of rest for the eye.
The title reads like a sequence of impressions and it gives a way into the work. Rather than naming a particular place, it lists three sensations that might stay with you after you leave one: the fall of light, the sounds in the air, the shimmer across water. The painting answers that rhythm, its colour and movement working less as a description of a precise view and more as a memory of standing by a waterside when everything around you is bright and in motion.
Horkan builds the surface with thick oil worked by palette knife into curled and broken marks so the blossom areas rise in low relief and send small shadows across the canvas, while the central light is kept thinner and more hazed, and the water is pulled into longer reflective strokes. The broken touch lets multiple colours sit inside each mark, so the whole painting glints and vibrates as you move, the method itself creating the shimmer that the title names.
