The Top Of The Mountain You May Never Reach, Yet Losing The Race Can Be The Best Way To Teach is a contemporary mixed media portrait exploring ambition, resilience, failure and personal growth. Rather than depicting the mountain or race literally, O’Connor turns the title inward, presenting struggle and losing as experiences from which transformation can emerge.

A female portrait rises through a dense mass of leaves, petals and botanical forms, her eyes looking upward and lips slightly parted. The direction of her gaze subtly echoes the title’s unreachable “top of the mountain”, while the vegetation increasingly resembles flames as it climbs around and beyond her face. The figure appears almost to emerge from this flame-like foliage, suggesting energy, transformation and the capacity to grow through adversity.

Rendered in crimson, coral, rust, pink and cream, the leaves are individually outlined and veined, with flashes of turquoise and blue running through both the foliage and the woman’s face. This shared colour and linework dissolves the boundary between female portraiture and nature, while looser washes and paint splatters contrast with the intricate botanical detail. The imagery can be read as both growth and fire: something flourishing, but also something transformed through pressure and difficulty.

The unusually long, rhyming title ultimately reframes conventional ideas of success. The mountain may remain unreached and the race may be lost, yet neither experience is presented as meaningless; failure itself can become a source of learning, resilience and growth.

The Top Of The Mountain You May Never Reach, Yet Losing The Race Can Be The Best Way To Teach is an original, one-of-one mixed media painting on wood panel, 76.2 × 50.8 cm, available through Eclectic Gallery, Fitzrovia, London. To enquire or arrange a private viewing, contact the gallery.
