"Calipso" is a painting by Alexey Golovin, created in 2016. The artwork depicts the mythical figure of Calypso, a nymph who appears in Greek mythology. Calypso was a nymph who lived on the island of Ogygia. She is best known for her role in the story of the hero Odysseus. After Odysseus and his men were shipwrecked on her island, Calypso kept Odysseus captive for several years, offering him immortality and eternal youth if he would stay with her. Eventually, Hermes, the messenger of the gods, was sent to demand that Calypso release Odysseus and allow him to return home to his wife and kingdom in Ithaca. Calypso reluctantly agreed and helped Odysseus to build a raft and leave her island. The story of Calypso and Odysseus is often seen as a metaphor for the conflict between the desire for pleasure and the need for duty and responsibility.
The image captures a sense of mystery and enchantment, hinting at the magic and power that Calypso is said to possess in the ancient tales.
