Danny O'Connor United Kingdom, 1981
22 x 42"
Silence Draped In Starlight is a contemporary mixed media portrait built around a striking circular composition. A solitary female face emerges from an almost celestial disc, surrounded by deep cobalt, turquoise and indigo. Her steady gaze contrasts with the sweeping rays of white, blue and black that radiate across the canvas, creating a sense of light travelling through darkness.
Intricate floral and ornamental patterns move across the woman’s face and around the circular form, giving the portrait an almost decorated, jewel-like quality. Beyond it, stencilled roses, flowers and botanical motifs emerge from the dark blue ground. The combination of cool colour, luminous white detailing and circular geometry creates a distinctly wintry, nocturnal atmosphere, while the surrounding rays suggest starlight, illumination and energy breaking outward from the otherwise contained portrait.
The title Silence Draped In Starlight turns both silence and light into something almost physical. The woman appears enclosed within the luminous circle, yet the composition expands dramatically beyond it: stillness at the centre, movement at the edges. Through female portraiture, floral imagery, expressive abstraction and celestial motifs, O’Connor creates a work suspended between introspection and radiance.
Silence Draped In Starlight is an original, one-of-one contemporary mixed media painting on canvas, 55.8 × 106.6 cm, available through Eclectic Gallery, Fitzrovia, London. To enquire or arrange a private viewing, contact the gallery.
