Victoria Horkan
Into the Blue is an original oil painting on canvas measuring 100 x 100 cm by Victoria Horkan. At the centre of a square expanse of turquoise and aquamarine, a mass of warm colour rises and tips slightly to the right, like blossom caught mid-sway. Short, curved strokes of crimson, fuchsia, apricot and honeyed ochre are packed so closely that they form a raised canopy, while below them looser marks in jade, teal and lapis scatter into a cooler field. The surface shifts from dense, knotted impasto in the central form to broader, dragged passages in the surrounding blue, where vertical drips soften edges and pull the eye back towards the lower edge.
This painting takes the language of flowers and coral and lets it float inside a blue atmosphere rather than fixing it to land or sea. The title names an act rather than a view: "into" signals immersion and forward movement, not observation from a distance, and the composition follows that logic precisely, placing the warm central cluster inside the blue on all sides rather than at its edge. The central cluster feels weightless, suspended rather than rooted, so the work reads less as a view of a place and more as a state of mind, a moment where colour and light seem to push upward together. Compared with Horkan’s storm pieces, this is the bright register of her practice, the side where immersion in water feels expansive and buoyant rather than overwhelming.
