Beyond the Medium with Masoud Akhavanjam
Masoud Akhavanjam: Sculpting a Vision of Social, Political, and Environmental Commentary
In the world of art, there are those whose creations not only capture your gaze but also your imagination, provoking thought and igniting the spark of inspiration. One such artist is Masoud Akhavanjam, whose sculptures transcend mere aesthetics to delve into the profound issues that shape our world today. We recently had the privilege of sitting down with Masoud for an insightful interview that offers a glimpse into the heart and mind of this talented sculptor.
Interview with Masoud Akhavanjam:
What was the pivotal moment or experience that ignited your passion for art and made you want to become an artist?
"After many years of studying and being professionally engaged in Human Resources management and production, I felt this urge to express my feelings and my thoughts about social, political, and environmental issues that surround us in today’s world. And what better way to do that than by conceiving artworks that will depict my ideas and embody my thoughts in a sculpture artwork."
How do you come up with ideas for your sculptures, and what inspires your creative concepts?
"I spend much time thinking about the challenges we face in the world, and I get inspired by the fact that as an artist, I’ve been given a chance to express my philosophy on these subjects, considering my educational background, my life experience and the fortune I’ve had to live in so many countries around the world."
Are there any particular materials or tools you find indispensable in your artistic process?
"Yes, I mostly use Stainless steel, which is a very contemporary material and I think is very suitable for representing contemporary issues."
Can you discuss the connection between your personal experiences and the themes explored in your art or sculptures?
"Throughout my life, I’ve been much observant of social, political, economical, and environmental issues. The greed for wealth, power, and in times the disregard of the greater goods, and the environment have been embedded in many of my artworks."
Can you share an example of a piece of art or sculpture that was created with a specific audience in mind? What motivated this approach?
"Of course, the sculpture 'Conflictus' is depicting the conflict humans have with each other with regard to nature. Any particular group in the world has a different perspective as to what is the right way to treat nature, considering their own agendas."
What challenges or obstacles do you encounter during the creation of your sculptures, and how do you overcome them?
"The biggest challenge I encounter is the very fact that one sculpture can usually only depict so much concept. As an artist, you are very limited to express your ideas. However, I do use mythical figures and combinations or “fused” figures to overcome this obstacle."
How do you balance spontaneity and planning in your art-making process?
"When conceiving a sculpture, you really cannot use spontaneity; planning is the only way to create a good artwork."
When you look at a finished piece, can you identify aspects of your personality or experiences that are embedded in the artwork?
"Indeed I can. The artwork has to embody my feelings and emotions. This is my objective: to express what is boiling in me."
Can you describe the feeling of seeing your work displayed in a gallery setting compared to other platforms?
"I think gallery space is the one place artworks have to be displayed for viewing, no distraction, no other subjects or objects in one’s thoughts or observance. Then again, when it does finally reach its final destination, say a collector’s home, it becomes even more meaningful as the viewer has much more time to observe it and engage with the concept the artwork expresses."
Lastly, if there's one key takeaway you'd like our audience to remember about your art, what would it be?
“I would say the uniqueness of deconstructive figures and the philosophy behind the works.”
