Founded in 1959, the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) transformed film poster design into an art form, commissioning bold, hand-screen-printed works by some of Cuba’s most celebrated graphic artists. These posters are now recognised internationally as important cultural heritage, with the 1960–1980 collection inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2023. This exhibition at the Eclectic Gallery, Fitzrovia, brings a specially selected collection of original ICAIC posters, screen-printed in Cuba and supplied directly from ICAIC, to the UK specifically for exhibition and sale in association with the London Latino Film Festival - offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire officially authenticated works. Their arrival is particularly poignant at a time when Cuba is facing a severe economic and energy crisis, making these vibrant examples of Cuban creativity and cultural heritage all the more significant.
The London Latin American Film Festival (LoLaFF) is a new annual festival celebrating the richness and diversity of Latin American cinema, bringing filmmakers, audiences and the wider creative community together across London. Taking place 2-6 October, LoLaFF has made this exhibition possible by bringing these rare, officially authenticated Cuban film posters directly from ICAIC to London for audiences and collectors to experience and own.
